A shapeshifting tree house that took on the body of a ship, a house, or anything we wanted, really. This tree house stood in my parents backyard from the spring my mother was pregnant with me until shortly after I photographed it on the morning of my 20th birthday. And the walnut tree that towers over it a NW Deertrail, in Parkville, MO.

I know she is here because my strings still make sweet songs. Plucking. I see her in the reflections of me, or anyone, really. I know she is here because I still get a tickle in my throat and blood in my cheeks. The cold southern sun still warms the sheets for me, so I know she is here. I can hear the bubbles popping against the aluminum. Echoing inside the can. I haven’t rolled an ankle or gotten a splinter in some time, so I know she is here.

For the show, Avery, Lauren, and I decided to create artist portraits of each other at the front of the exhibition. I had the honor of photographing Avery [Avery painted Lauren and Lauren did a mixed-media piece of me]. I shot a few rolls of 35 with her at sunset in a field not too far from my home. I ended up with this lovely in-camera double exposure of her on Portra 160.
